Will the iPad Save Magazines?

I'm just gonna jump on the bandwagon here and post about the iPad launch because that's what everybody's doing on the Internet today.

Plus, I'm a magazine editor, and magazine editors and publishers everywhere are asking themselves, Is this the technology that will save our butts?

Not to mention there may be applications for kayaking too.

Is it Too Easy to Call for Help?

Thinking about the new Delorme/SPOT device and the day, not far off, when we'll all be able to text-message anyone from anywhere on the planet got me wondering about what some old-school wilderness idealists would have thought about our age of information technology. 

A quarter-century ago people were already wondering if it wasn't getting too easy to call for a rescue.

New Year's Resolutions - Kayak Racing

I love New Year's Resolutions. I make tons of them. I like to have a wide selection when I'm choosing which ones to break.

This is supposed to be - I mean, will be - the year that I start kayak racing. Since last year wasn't.

It's been a dream of mine to get into surf ski paddling on Lake Ontario. Last spring I ran into an avid racer who generously offered to loan me his old surf ski for the season. It's a great ski, he said, and just needs a few repairs. The rudder's jammed and there's a crack on the seam.
