Wednesday, February 2, only 99 days after he set off, Aleksander Doba landed safely on the beaches of Fortaleza, Brazil.
For those who haven't been following the story Aleksander Doba paddled from the coast of Sengal in Africa to the Fortaleza, Brazil in just 99 days. Infact after 99 days, 7 hours, 20 minutes and 5394 km Aleksander Doba is the first Pole and third person in the world who has crossed the Atlantic ocean in a kayak.
Here are some official stats from Aleksander's site
- Landing in Brazil, Feb 2nd, 2011, 2:10pm local time
- Expedition ended in port of Acarau: 5:50pm
- Total distance travelled: 3345 miles = 5384 km
- Total time: 99 days, 6 hours, 20 minutes
Aleksander's son said on Aleksander's website, "thanks to his determination, strong will and experience Aleksander's biggest challenge ever has been a success".
Despite adverse weather conditions, battles with the currents, high winds and massive waves he still managed to make it in a kayak powered only by his own physical strength and mind to push on. Being close to the equator when the clouds weren't present the extreme heat forced to him to paddle only at night.
The expedition started in Dakar on 26th October 2010 at 2:30 (CET). In addition to the previous mentioned conditions Aleksander also had to deal with the failure of his automatic desalinator and the fact that his food supply could run out if the expedition took longer then estimated.
The expedition was such a huge deal for poland that Polish Ambassador to Brazil Mr Jacek Junosza Kisielewski was part of his welcoming party when he arrived.
Alek's seven metre long carbon aramide boat was equipped with desalinator, solar panel, batteries and fresh water containers. Produced in Szczecin (Poland) by Andrzej Arminski it was specially designed by Rafal Glodek, Michal Klimka and Radoslaw Zygmunt. Watertight compartments were implemented into the design to prevent sinking and the big hoops to prevent a complete capsize.
When faced with un-safe paddling conditions Aleksander could find shelter in the watertight front cabin. Should an emegency arise services could be contacted through a satellite phone and a tracking system broadcasted his position at all times.
Regular updates on his progress were posted at www.transatlantic2010.blogspot.com. Congratulations on a successful journey and thankfully a safe return.
