VIDEO: The Making of a Plastic Kayak

This video shows the production of a rotomoulded sea kayak, the Venture Easky 15. When you see the facility you can understand why rotomoulding is capital-intensive, requiring investment in moulds and ovens, but allows faster production of large numbers of kayaks at a reduced cost.

This is one reason why these kayaks can be made in Britain, while the labour-intensive production of composite kayaks is migrating to China, Thailand, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. (It should be noted, however, that Venture's parent company, P&H, still produces its composite kayaks in Britain.).

There's still quite a bit of detail work involved in finishing a plastic kayak, however. Here's Part 2 of the video showing the finishing touches.

Watch for our review of the Venture Easky 15 coming up in the May issue of Adventure Kayak.
