ak0720-andycorra2-200px Andy Corra of Durango, Colorado, owner of 4Corners Riversports, has set a new world mark of 273.5 miles (440.15 km) in the 24 hour distance record on moving water. The record is unofficial until verified by Guinness.

The 49 year old Corra launched his Epic V12 surfski on the Yukon River, in the Yukon Territory, Canada, on June 27th, 2010, at 12 noon.

With his support crew, led by paddler Jeremy Rodgers, of Boulder Colorado, following in a motorboat.

24 hours later, Corra had averaged 11.4 mph (18.35 kph).

Corra, a three time U.S. Wildwater National Champion, had his eye on the record for several years, hoping to beat the previous record of 261.4 miles, set by adventure racer Ian Adamson in 2004, before his 50th birthday.

The Yukon River, running nearly 40,000 cfs lower than when the record was set by Adamson (68,500 vs 107,800 cfs), was chosen because of its speed (averaging 5 mph), the 24 hours of daylight, and its history with the record.

Corra commented...

I thought this year was going to be a practice run.

With the low water level I wasn't sure a record was in the cards.

But my GPS was staying above the average I needed, and as the hours clicked by I knew the record was within reach.

I had some low points, but my great crew kept me motivated and on pace.

Congratulations to Andy Corra for his record breaking journey.
