Hiawatha Paddling Festival

Spread over the second weekend in September, the 5th annual Hiawatha Paddling Festival is scheduled during one of the best times of the year for paddling. The water can still be warm, the wind calm, and best of all, the raptors are migrating!

This all inclusive weekend features, American Canoeing Association certified kayak instructors who teach everything from beginning strokes and techniques, to advanced skills and capsize rescues. Demonstrations will occur on and off the water throughout the weekend including navigation, paddling attire, Greenland rolling and rope gymnastics, star gazing, and trip presentations from your instructors.

cred_AP_1Cedar Campus, a conference and retreat center, is the venue of the festival. Nestled in picturesque Prentiss Bay on Lake Huron’s north shore, Cedar Campus offers snug cabins, great food, and protected waters for learning new skills. Venturing out of the bay, a paddler would find themselves at the east end of the historic Les Cheneaux Islands home to the festival’s organizer, Woods & Water Ecotours.

The festival’s purpose is to create a learning experience that would bridge skills between beginning recreational paddlers, coastal kayakers, and canoeists. By bringing in some of Michigan’s best sea kayak instructors the festival aims at advancing the skills of the participants so that they can be safe and enjoy the water on their own. The instructors bring a bit of themselves to the event and make the experience personal with the chance for lots of one-on-one attention for participants.

All inclusive weekend or daily sessions available. Rental equipment is available. For more information see kayakfest.org. Contact by email, info@WoodsWaterEcotours.com or (906) 484-4157.
