Michael Mechan replied to the topic Re: Sea Kayak Adventures in the forums.
Terry,
Thanks so much for posting the link...there are some great shots in here. I've done a little kayaking on the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island but never Johnstone Strait. Any recommendations for where we can get info on kayaking in the area? How was the guide service?

Phillip,
The Outfitters Adventure Gear is the only shop I've been to in St. John's. They offer rentals and programs so they'd presumably be able give you some ideas of where to paddle.
There's a small(ish) community called Brigus in Conception Bay. It has a sheltered harbour and there's some nice day paddling in the area.
Let us know if you find any stellar spots!

Michael Mechan created a new topic New World Record! in the forums.
Heard the news?
Harry Whelan and Jeff Allen from Cornwall completed the fastest recorded circumnavigation of Ireland by kayak - an incredible 25 days.
They spent their last few days of their adventure paddling constantly for over 250Km in 36 hours to reach Ardmore, Waterford - their final destination. They were delayed by one day due to poor wind conditions and extreme tiredness, but still managed to knock 8 days off the current record of 33 days, held by Mick O'Meara and Dermot Blout.
Experienced kayakers Harry and Jeff left on the 22nd April; their trip is also raising funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Action and the trip was filmed by Vaughn Roberts of Romany Productions.
During their adventure Jeff and Harry have been paddling though particularly unfavourable weather conditions - strong head winds, large swells and also had to deal with hypothermia, hallucinations, infected hands, no sleep and getting robbed.
Their blog can be found at www.expeditionpaddler.com.
We highlighted the expedition in the Early Summer issue of Adventure Kayak (www.adventurekayakmag.com/adventurekayakmag_earlysummer11). At press time, they hadn't completed the circuit but we're happy to hear they were successful.

John,
This is disconcerting. Do you have a weblink or any info on where we can find out more?

A few of us around the Adventure Kayak Magazine offices have been to Newfoundland and whole-heartedly agree, Malcolm.
Sometime in the fall we also got to talking about Labrador. Do you have any experience in the Torngats? The relatively new National Park there has (slightly) improved access and there's got to be some tremendous paddling on the often forgotten Labrador coast.
