john allsop replied to the topic Re: SAILS ON KAYAKS in the forums.
I have just received a JIB sail from KAYAKSAILOR and it is very well thought out and all the parts are well made from good materials, my local lake is still frozen and as we have now slipped back to normal temps it will be a few weeks before i try it for real, but i am absolutly certain it will be a great asset for those of us who sail and paddle our boats. This is a sail outfit that everone should consider, you can still paddle even when it is raised and this gives extra speed.

john allsop replied to the topic Re: KLEPPER BACKYAK in the forums.
I have heard from Klepper that the BACKYAKS, silver and black, that i have seen on the Klepper web site are the prototype models. The first producion models will probably be available by the end of March 2012 and be silver, but i feel it maybe later than March.I think the first models are made to order. This looks like a very interesting design.

Has anyone yet seen the new take apart kayak by klepper called backyak, i am wondering about the sealing of the joints. Talking about fold ups in general they don,t seem to be at outdoor shows, at least in ontario, I know the klepper dealer in Calgary does display them at shows in the west, but without people seeing the various makes how do the manufacturers expect to sell them, there was only the TRAK and Puffin SACO which is really a canoe in the paddling buyers guide.

My latest add on to my Klepper Aerius 2 is the KAYAKSAILOR SAIL by Kuvia LLC. It appears to be really made for hard shells but can with a little thought be fitted to any craft. I paddle and sail from the rear seat of the Aerius so i had to make my own design which is simple and cheap or should i say inexpensive. It consists of two cross pieces of wood which are held onto the Klepper coaming with "J" clamps (from klepper), the sail mount is bolted to the front cross piece and the sail cross tube which also holds the KAYAKSAILOR LEE BOARDS is clamped to the rear cross member, i hope the photo helps

As most people will know Klepper is considered to be the "premium" folder which has been around for over 100 years and if looked after last a lifetime, although after about 25 years or so a new "skin/hull" maybe required. I have just received their latest catalog and it,s a "keeper" (i have them going back to the 1960s)it is of very good quality and is more than a catalog, well worth aquiring. If any one would like one then contact the klepper dealer Marlin- Marine out east or Auto marine in Calgary. Further more the making of a Klepper will be on the Discovery channel on June the 3rd at 8-00 pm which should be interesting. The Klepper was one of the first sea kayaks as it crossed the Atlantic in 1956 completly unsupported and unaided Of course it,s not like the sleek fibreglass kayaks of recent years but never the less a good paddlig and sailing craft.

I have now received a reply from the minister of natural resources, Of course it,s not really a reply but a statement It does nothing to help the people in the Wawa/Dubreuilville area which has serious lake banning problems and it is now i am told, going to happen in the Nipigon area.

It seems now that the Goverment has dropped the idea of canoe/kayak regristration which is good news, must be election year.

No one seems too interested YET on the "plan" by the federal "goverment" to make people who take out groups paddling license their boats. We should take note as i have not seen any "goverment" reason for this, it looks like another TAX and eventually it could happen to individuals so we should all ask our mp,s why.

john allsop replied to the topic Re: My kayaking adventures. in the forums.
Lee do we take it have never had any? A day on the local lake or river is always an "adventure", a few days or a week or more, even more so. Very few of us can go and paddle or sail our kayaks to far flung destinations which could be classed as an "adventure", but again someone on the other side of the world might really like to come to ours. I look out of the window this morning it,s brilliant sunshine, the lake is awaiting and it,s minus 32c, my paddling may not start untill May or June, if i am lucky then i can look forward to 16 weeks, if it,s nice every day before our next winter starts to show it,s face. Up here in Northern Ontario the seasons are fantastic.

john allsop created a new topic KLEPPER CONTEST 2011 in the forums.
There is another contest for a Klepper Folder. This year it,s a single seater and in my opinion the best touring folder of it,s type. Log onto www.klepper.ca to down load an entry form and the rules, fill in the form, send it to the address shown on it in Ottawa for your chance to win. Open to Canadian residents only, but unfortunatly Quebec is excluded owing to their regulations. No entry fee, someone somewhere in Cnada will win it. I of course have sent my entry.

YES contact Tom Brason brason@sympatico.ca When the minister of natural resources said for some lakes we could carry our equipment to them it would only be 3km or more, i sent her this photo and invited her to come to Manitouwadge and demonstrate it as i am 73 and it would be easy for her as she is younger, guess what i am still waiting.

john allsop created a new topic LEASING OF NORTHERN ONTARIO LAKES in the forums.
The Ontario Goverment is leasing many Northern Ontario lakes to remote tourist outfitters who charge big bucks to visitors for the use of their lodges and private use of the lakes. The local people and any visitor from anywhere are find heavily if they pass a sign saying it is restricted access. This is Crown land and this goverment has made minor changes to the laws to make their actions "legal". These areas are patrolled by MNR employees who issue fines. Find out what has happened in the Dubreuilville and Wawa areas. Right now the general public and main stream media don,t seem to care, they should. Already paddlers from the USA are starting to keep away and more will, why should they support Ontario. One of the reasons for the leasing of these lakes is to give the paying visitor(s) a feeling of remoteness. I sent the attached photo to the minister concerned and asked how could i destroy that in my klepper when they are going around the lake in gasoline powered boats. I received No reply.
