12th Annual YRQ

yrq-410px

Every year paddlers make their way north (waaaay north) in an attempt to take home the title of 1st place in the Yukon River Quest.

A recent feature in Adventure Kayak by writer Alison Wood talks about the experience of Peter Whaley, Jamie Playfair and Matt Gunning of Halifax and their title bid in the Quest.

yrq1-190pxThis is the 12th year of this annual event growing exponentially each year. The route takes racers in kayak and canoe over a distance of 740kms from Whitehorse to Dawson city via the Yukon River and is the longest known annual race of it’s kind.

This is a serious event with regulations on boats and gear with numerous teams from around the globe.

Last year saw 72 teams made up of 171 paddlers.

Sign up for the race opened in November 1st 2009 and are now closed as of May 1st 2010.

Details from a recent press release provided by the organizers of the race is available at the race website. To read the feature article by Alison Wood in Adventure Kayak go to our online editions.
