Top U.S. Kayak Trips

Kaua’i’s Na Pali Coast and five other kayak trips made National Geographic Adventure’s list of The 50 Best American Adventures.

One kayaking trip made the top 10, taking second place. There’s no explanation of the methodology, and of course we’d have put a lot more kayak trips onto the list. I mean, would you really put four-wheeling in Oregon above paddling Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands? Not if you’re a sea kayaker. But chacun à son goût. Here’s the list of kayaking trips that made National Geographic Adventure’s top 50:

1. (2/50) Lake Yellowstone, Wyoming
NG calls this “an American version of Africa’s Okavango Delta,” and recommends wildlife viewing by paddling a sea kayak into the Yellowstone River from Yellowstone Lake’s Southeast Arm at dawn or dusk.

2. (12/50) NOLS Semester, Alaska
The National Outdoor Leadership School’s semester programs are the Wild West version of the gap year for restless youth and aspiring outdoor leaders—especially the one in Alaska, which features kayaking in Prince William Sound, among other adventures.

3. (13/50) The Na Pali Coast, Hawaii
NG calls it “the most stunning paddling trip in the country, if not the world.” It’s 17-miles, a perfect two-day trip featuring beaches and 3,000-foot cliffs (Napalikayak.com).

4. (41/50) Santa Cruz Island, California
This Channel Island off the coast of Ventura is part of a National Park and home to the world’s largest sea caves (Islandpackers.com).

5. (46/50) The Maine Island Trail, Maine
“The East’s top kayaking destination: 4,600 islands, 375 miles of trail,” says NG.

6. (47/50) The Everglades, Florida
For you list-keepers, this falls under the “see it before it disappears” category of adventure travel destinations, as one of the country’s most threatened ecosystems. Kayak a portion of the 990-mile Wilderness Waterway.
