New Modular Kayak

The new Point 65 Tequila! sit-on-top comes in two pieces, and you can extend it by adding a third, fourth, fifth or more.

The name includes an exclamation mark for a reason. In designing its new kayak Swedish kayak manufacturer Point 65 came up with a boat to meet a raft of tough criteria, in the words of founder Richard Ohman:

  • Equal or better performance than a standard kayak
  • Produced in rotomolded polyethelene
  • Fit in a station wagon
  • Fit in a small elevator
  • Fit in a small apartment
  • Be lightweight enough for a child to carry (30 lbs max)
  • Take less than 10 seconds to assemble
  • Be modular so it can be used as a solo, tandem, triple and more
  • Hold up for abuse, play, surfing on waves etc
  • Each section should be possible to emergency paddle
To meet these standards the company enlisted a skilled industrial designer, Magnus de Brito, who has also worked on Porsche auto bodies.

The single Tequila! comes with two ends that ratchet together like pieces of 3-D puzzle. There's an optional midsection that you can put between the ends to turn it into a tandem.

Here's a video showing the Tequila! in action:

What’s really interesting is that you don’t have to stop at a tandem. Ohman says,

"Add another midsection and it becomes a triple etc. Who will make the longest Tequila!? Send me your picture proof and the winner gets a bottle of, you guessed it, Tequila!"
