It’s a Record

Joe Oblenis from Thunder Bay, Ontario, once again is the new record holder for a Vancouver Island circumnavigation.

The previous record of 17 days, 4 hours and 49 minutes held by British paddler Sean Morely was taken by Joe at 8:22pm on September 4th, 2010. An article about Sean’s record was in the Flotsam & Jetsam section of Adventure Kayak in the Spring 2009 issue.

Joe’s time for the new record… 16 days, 12hours and 14 minutes. Before Sean's record, the record actually belonged to Joe at 23 days, 10 hours.

Joe attributes some of his success to his hand crafted Greenland paddles. He said he would not have even tried the record attempt with any other type of paddle as the Greenland was so easy on his body and allowed for full recovery overnight through out his journey.

Joe sends out thanks to many people who helped make this happen and to those who encouraged him along the way. Read more about Joe's experience at www.joeoblenis.com.
